Fierce Advocate is a platform for issues-based journalistic content. We seek stories from John Jay students, faculty, staff, and alumni that touch or comment on current news (local, national, or international) and have a social justice theme. Our favorite stories foster meaningful conversation and dialogue – they get people talking. FA is a platform to exchange ideas, big or small. We encourage our writers to ask questions before seeking answers.
What we’re looking for is far-reaching – we accept blog posts, news articles, op-eds, feature stories, personal essays, photo essays, film and literature reviews, documentary videos, audio stories or podcasts, and other multimedia content. We encourage students to pitch ideas for stories before submitting finished pieces.
Please send submissions and pitches as well as general feedback and suggestions to FierceAdvocate@jjay.cuny.edu.
Some of the issues we are actively seeking to cover include but are not limited to:
- Immigration and citizenship
- Mass incarceration
- Restorative justice
- Reproductive justice
- The refugee crisis
- National and local politics
- Cyber security and cyber resilience
- LGBTQIA issues
- Gun control and gun violence prevention
- Community activism
- Voting rights
- Veteran’s issues
- Latinx issues
All content must adhere to college policies and guidelines. We do not pay for submissions at this time.
All submissions must be original content. FA does not publish content previously published online, in academic journals or in print publications. Original content must adhere to applicable copyright laws.
However, FA does aggregate content and will publish short posts linking to stories published elsewhere online when they are submitted by the original author. John Jay faculty may submit shorts posts summarizing content from their own blogs and publications, and FA will link to the original source. However, faculty are encouraged to compose original submissions with the FA audience in mind. FA does not publish or link to articles appearing in academic journals.
The content we’re NOT looking for: FA does not publish stories in which John Jay College or CUNY is the main focus of the story. FA is not a student newspaper or a campus forum. It is a curated publication produced by the John Jay Office of Marketing and Communications that seeks to promote voices of the JJC community. FA reserves the right to edit or remove content at any time.
